Choosing swimwear can feel different after breast surgery.
Whether you have had breast augmentation, breast uplift, breast reduction, implant replacement or another breast procedure, your body may feel different from the last time you shopped for a bikini or swimsuit.
You may be a new size. Your breast shape may have changed. You may want more support than before, or you may simply be figuring out what feels comfortable and flattering for your new shape.
If you are planning a holiday, spa day, swim or summer event, this guide explains what to consider when choosing swimwear after breast surgery, including fit, support, comfort and when it may be safe to wear swimwear again.
We also spoke with Rhian Williams, who had breast enlargement surgery with the team in December 2018, to hear her advice on finding swimwear that feels supportive, feminine and confidence-boosting.
When Can I Wear Swimwear After Breast Surgery?
You should always follow your surgeon’s aftercare advice before wearing swimwear, swimming or going in a pool, hot tub or the sea.
In the early stages of recovery, your incisions need time to heal and your breasts need proper support. You may be advised to wear a surgical bra or supportive post-surgery bra for a set period before moving into normal bras or swimwear.
Before wearing swimwear, make sure:
- Your surgeon has cleared you to do so
- Your incisions are fully healed
- You are no longer needing dressings
- Swimwear does not rub against scars or sensitive areas
- You feel comfortable and supported
- You are not rushing back into swimming or activity too soon
Even if you feel well, your body may still be healing underneath the skin. If you are unsure, speak to your aftercare team first.
Choosing Swimwear After Breast Augmentation
After breast augmentation, your breast size, projection and shape may be different, so your old swimwear may no longer fit in the same way.
When choosing a bikini after breast augmentation, look for styles that offer support as well as shape.
You may prefer:
- Underwired bikini tops, once your surgeon says underwire is suitable
- Moulded cup styles
- Halter neck tops with wider straps
- Adjustable shoulder straps
- Clip-back fastenings instead of tie-only backs
- Bikini tops sold by bra size
- Supportive longline bikini tops
- Swimsuits with built-in support
Try to avoid very flimsy triangle tops if they do not give enough support or feel secure. Some patients love them, but others find they do not offer the structure they want after implants.
Choosing Swimwear After a Breast Uplift
After a breast uplift, also known as mastopexy, you may find your breast position and shape has changed more than your size.
The best swimwear after breast uplift surgery is usually something that supports your new shape without putting pressure on healing scars.
You may want to look for:
- Soft but supportive cups
- Adjustable straps
- Wider bands
- Styles that do not dig into the breast crease
- Swimsuits or bikinis with gentle shaping
- Tops that lift without feeling too tight
If you have scars around the areola, vertically down the breast or along the breast crease, make sure your swimwear feels comfortable and does not rub.
Choosing Swimwear After Breast Reduction
After breast reduction surgery, many patients find swimwear shopping easier because their breasts feel lighter and more proportionate. However, support is still important, especially while scars are settling.
You may prefer:
- Bra-sized swimwear
- Full-cup bikini tops
- Swimsuits with built-in support
- Adjustable straps
- Wide shoulder straps
- Secure fastenings
- Styles that support without compressing
If you previously struggled to find swimwear that fitted both your bust and body, you may find you now have more options. Take your time trying different shapes to see what feels best.
Patient Advice: Speaking to Rhian Williams
To make this guide more personal, we spoke with Rhian Williams, who had breast enlargement surgery with the team in December 2018.
Rhian kindly shared how surgery affected her confidence, how she found shopping for swimwear afterwards and what styles helped her feel most comfortable and supported.
Hi Rhian, can you tell us more about your surgery and how it affected your body confidence?
“I’m absolutely in love with my new boobs. So many people have complimented me. They look so natural, which is exactly what I wanted.
I talked through my options with the surgeon and we agreed on 450cc implants under the muscle. They fit my frame perfectly.
My healing time wasn’t too bad, and I can’t fault anything about my surgery or aftercare. I now have a lot more confidence in myself, and I feel more womanly.”
Do you have any summer plans?
“Yes. I have booked to go away and I can’t wait. I am going to Tenerife for two weeks.”
What swimwear styles work best for you after breast surgery?
“I love halter neck tops because they offer more support, but still have a feminine style.
I also try to choose tops that fasten with clips rather than just ties, and I look for thicker straps because they give extra support.”
Where do you like to shop for swimwear?
“Ann Summers have some beautiful bikinis that fit really well. I also recommend H&M and Primark.”
What is your best swimwear buying tip?
“Don’t stress. Choosing swimwear is very much like buying underwear. Often, the same shops you buy bras from will sell bikinis in similar styles and shapes you already know and love.
Stay clear of string or flimsy bras if they do not offer enough definition or support. Knowing which type of bra you like most can help you narrow down which swimwear to choose.”
A big thank you to Rhian for sharing her experience. Every patient’s body, surgery and recovery is different, but her advice is a helpful reminder that swimwear should make you feel supported, comfortable and confident.
What Makes Good Swimwear After Breast Implants?
The best bikini for breast implants is not the same for everyone. It depends on your implant size, breast shape, frame, scar position and personal style.
However, good post-surgery swimwear usually has:
- Proper support
- Adjustable straps
- Secure fastenings
- Enough cup coverage
- Comfortable fabric
- No rubbing around scars
- A fit that feels secure when you move
- A shape that makes you feel confident
You may need to try a few styles before finding what feels right. This is completely normal.
Swimwear Styles to Consider
Halter Neck Bikinis
Halter neck styles can offer good lift and shape, especially if they have wider straps and a secure back fastening.
Bra-Sized Bikini Tops
These are often helpful after breast surgery because they fit more like lingerie and give better support than standard small, medium or large sizing.
Supportive Swimsuits
A swimsuit with built-in support can be a good option if you want more coverage, comfort and security.
Longline Bikini Tops
Longline styles can feel supportive and flattering because they offer more structure around the bust and ribcage.
High-Waisted Bikini Bottoms
If you have had body surgery as well as breast surgery, such as a tummy tuck or liposuction, high-waisted bottoms may feel more comfortable and supportive.
What to Avoid in the Early Stages
Once you are cleared to wear swimwear, comfort should still come first.
You may want to avoid:
- Very tight bikini tops
- Thin straps that dig in
- Tie-only tops that feel insecure
- Underwire before you are cleared to wear it
- Rough seams near scars
- Styles that press on sensitive areas
- Swimwear that pulls the breasts together too tightly
- Anything that feels uncomfortable when you move
If something looks good but feels uncomfortable, it is not the right option yet.
Think About Scars and Sun Protection
Scars can be sensitive to sunlight, especially while they are still new.
If your scars are exposed in swimwear, speak to your surgeon or aftercare team about sun protection and when it is safe for scars to be exposed.
You may be advised to:
- Keep scars covered
- Use high-factor SPF once healed
- Avoid direct sun on scars
- Choose swimwear that covers healing areas
- Avoid sunbeds during recovery
Protecting your scars can help them settle as well as possible over time.
Try Swimwear on at Home First
Before wearing new swimwear on holiday or to the pool, try it on at home first.
Check how it feels when you:
- Stand
- Sit
- Reach
- Bend
- Walk
- Move your arms
- Adjust the straps
- Fasten and unfasten it
This helps you work out whether it is supportive, comfortable and secure before you wear it for a full day.
Buying Tips for Swimwear After Breast Surgery
When shopping for swimwear after breast surgery:
- Get measured if you are unsure of your new size
- Try bra-sized swimwear where possible
- Choose support over flimsy styles
- Look for adjustable straps and secure fastenings
- Consider your scar position
- Avoid anything that rubs or digs in
- Try different shapes before deciding
- Do not rush the process
- Choose what makes you feel comfortable and confident
Your size may also continue to settle after surgery, so you may not want to invest in expensive swimwear too early in recovery.
Confidence Comes First
After breast surgery, it can take time to get used to your new shape.
Some patients feel excited to shop for swimwear straight away. Others feel unsure and need more time. Both are completely normal.
The right swimwear should help you feel:
- Supported
- Comfortable
- Secure
- Confident
- Like yourself
There is no rule that says you need to wear a certain type of bikini or swimsuit after surgery. Choose what feels right for your body, your recovery and your confidence.

Can I wear a bikini after breast augmentation?
Yes, once you are fully healed and cleared by your surgeon. Many patients choose supportive bikini tops with adjustable straps, secure fastenings and good cup support.
What is the best bikini for breast implants?
The best bikini for breast implants is one that fits well, supports your breast shape and feels comfortable. Bra-sized bikini tops, halter necks and supportive cup styles can work well.
